Women's Suffragists Parade in Washington D.C.
4 March 1913
Suffragette (derived from "suffrage", the right to vote) refers to members of the late 19th and early 20th century women's suffrage movement in the United Kingdom and USA. Originally a derogatory term used by those hostile to women's suffrage, the term later became a label without negative connotations.
Suffragettes fought for their cause with direct action, such as chaining themselves to railings. Many imprisoned suffragettes went on hunger strikes, during which they were forcibly fed.
