These days in history:
Conquest of Tunis
1 June 1535
In 1535 the Spanish Empire attacked Tunis, then under the control of the Ottoman Empire. Holy Roman Emperor Karl V (Charles V) of the Habsburg dynasty assembled a huge army and war fleet. He defeated the fleet of his Turkish opponent, Chaireddin (also known as Hayreddin) Barbarossa and captured Tunis on 1 June 1535.
The Dutch artist Jan Cornelisz Vermeyen depicted detailed scenes of the battle on an exquisite tapestry. He even included himself in the painting, acting as a war correspondent.
