The Hungarian Revolution began with a first mass-rally in Budapest on October 23, 1956. It was crushed by Soviet tanks and artillery after days of street-fighting.
A large proportion of the Hungarian army supported the insurgents: revolutionaries in an armoured car in front of the Corvin-ter cinema. The "Kossuth arms", national emblem of the republic of 1946, has been painted on a BTR-152 APC armoured car captured by the insurgents.
