The Hungarian Revolution began with a first mass-rally in Budapest on October 23, 1956. It was crushed by Soviet tanks and artillery after days of street-fighting.
The insurgents have hung the Hungarian national flag in a window of the HQ of AVH, the Communist Secret Police. The Communist emblem, hammer and sickle, has been removed from the flag in the foreground.
